Who can enter

The Competition is open to anyone who has created a woodburning artwork.

Eligible submissions

2D or 3D artworks created by woodburning.

  • Only new or recent works that have not been publicly exhibited (not submitted to other public exhibits).
  • Multiple entries can be submitted by each contestant.
  • There are no restrictions on the materials to use and whether coloring is added, but woodburning must be the primary technique used.

Submission categories (entries may be placed in different categories during judging)

Picture Category
- 2D artworks
- The entry must enable wall-mounted exhibition. (Attach the hooks and string needed for hanging.)
- Size: No more than 100 × 100 × 20 (thickness) cm. Weight: No more than 10 kg. (The maximum size shown includes the frame. Entries exceeding the maximum size will be disqualified.)
3D Category (designs for everyday items, craftworks, other)
- 3D artworks (sculptures, carvings, models, other)
 - The entry must enable floor- or wall-mounted exhibition. (Attach any stands or other devices needed to exhibit the work.)
- Size: No more than 100 × 100 × 100 cm. Weight: No more than 20 kg. (The maximum size shown includes any case or similar add-on the work may include. Entries exceeding the maximum size will be disqualified.)
- Designs for household products, kitchen implements or other everyday items.
- Entries can use wooden or other existing products, or involve reworking of used or leather items.
Thematic Category
Theme for 2018: Light
- 2D or 3D works embodying the theme above.
- Maximum size: Same as for Picture Category or 3D Category.
- Entries can be freely created to embody the theme through illustration or narrative. Entries must convey the theme.
Postcard Category
- Entries drawn on a postcard-sized board. Must be submitted without a frame.
- Each board will be considered a single entry.
- Size: No more than 11 × 15 × 1 (thickness) cm. (Entries exceeding the maximum size will be disqualified.)

Entry fee (per entry)

  • Picture Category, 3D Category, Thematic Category
    Japan Woodburning Association members: 3,000 yen;  Non-members: 5,000 yen

    Japan Woodburning Association members: Free for first entry (500 yen per entry thereafter);  
    Non-members: 1,000 yen

How to enter

Download Entry Form A/B (PDF file)

  1. Fill out the required fields in Entry Form A/B.
  2. Paste Entry Form B securely to the back of the artwork you want to submit.
  3. Deliver your artwork along with Entry Form A within the designated submission period.

A. Delivery by delivery company
- Entries can be sent to the address above by delivery company within the delivery period below.
- Delivery period: Entries must arrive between March 5 (Mon) and 12 (Mon), 2018.
- Packing materials used for delivery (such as cardboard boxes and cushioning materials) will also be used to transport entries to the exhibition venues and return them, so be sure to write your name in oil-based marker on the package.
(Note that the Japan Woodburning Association will write your name on the package if you haven’t labeled it.)
B. Delivery in person
- You can deliver your entry in person to the address above on the dates below.
- Delivery dates: Entries must be delivered between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm on March 5 (Mon) or 6 (Tue), 2018.
- Entries must be packaged before delivery to ensure their protection. Packing materials used for delivery (such as cardboard boxes and cushioning materials) will also be used to transport entries to the exhibition venues and return them, so be sure to write your name in oil-based marker on the package.
(Note that the Japan Woodburning Association will write your name on the package if you haven’t labeled it.)

Artwork retrieval

A. Retrieval by delivery company
- Your entry can be returned to you by delivery company if you desire (you pay the delivery charge upon arrival).
- All the entries (both winning and non-winning) will be returned to the contestants after the exhibit period (May 15 to 20, 2018).
(Contestants with entries returned to overseas addresses will be billed for shipment later.)
B. Retrieval in person
- You can retrieve your entry in person from the final exhibit venue (Ginza Hakko Kinoka) on the date below.
- Retrieval date: Entries must be retrieved between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm on May 21 (Mon), 2018.

Grand Prize: One winner
Prize certificate, gift certificate (50,000 yen value) and two sets of custom stamps commemorating the winning entry

Result notification

The results will be sent to contestants by post in a sealed envelope by about April 10, 2018.

Other information

  1. You must grant copyright permission to enable likenesses of your submitted entry to be reproduced in the print and broadcast media used to publicize and advertise the Competition. (You must permit the Japan Woodburning Association to photograph your entry, and publish a likeness and description of it in the Association’s newsletter and website.)
  2. To prevent copyright infringement when your submitted entry is based on a non-original design, be sure to enter information about the original (reference) artwork that your entry is based on in Entry Form A. Indicate the reference artwork’s title and creator, along with the publication in which it appears. Also attach a color photocopy showing the reference artwork.
  3. Your entry must not be signed or similarly marked in any way that could identify you as the artist. Entries with such identifying displays may be disqualified.
  4. You must bear all costs for the delivery and retrieval of your entry.
  5. The following types of entries are prohibited: Entries that could become malodorous, rotten or infested with microbes, larvae or other vermin; entries incorporating fresh flowers or unsanitized/non-fumigated wood or animal products; entries that may become misshapen or damaged; potentially hazardous entries
  6. While ample care will be taken to ensure that submitted entries are handled carefully after delivery, the organizers will assume no liability for any damage to artworks occurring for any reason (including natural and human disasters).
  7. In the event that an artwork is damaged at an exhibition venue during the exhibition period, a fixed payment of 5,000 yen will be paid.
  8. Your name, address and other personal information you provide in your application will be kept confidential in conformance with Japan’s personal privacy protection laws. It will not be used for any purpose other than the Competition.
